Welcome
The Amana Colonies were named a National Historic Landmark in 1965. A detailed examination of buildings, other structures and architectural design features in the Colonies was conducted ten years later by Genevieve and Timothy Keller. Since photography was not used as a tool in the study, the idea to add a photo documentation was developed.
Lothar Beyer used the Amana Heritage Society‘s archive resources and his own images to carry out such a project and develop this website. It contains the photos of XXX historic structures spread over the seven Amana Colonies communities.
November 2024 marked the beginning of the photography, which was completed in May 2025. The project’s goal is to match these new images with roughly 4000 historical photos from the museum archives. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
You can find a building by searching for the address, or by names of people who own a house or live(d) there, or by the name of a business, or by keywords like “kitchen house”, “gas station”, or “sandstone”.
